athletic field at casa grand day high school where people said that she excelled in three sports. >> people are holding up already. we can take the love that everyone is giving and keep moving forward. >> it's still a huge shock to a lot of us because she had such a special place in so many people's hearts. >> her family said it is overwhelmed by the community support. several restaurants are holding fundraisers this weekend to help with the expenses. her father released this statement. our family is devastated. we were still holding out hope that she would be found safe. she will be in our hearts forever. he spent the week in the sierra searching for her. a utility worker found her body yesterday morning. her friends she left early to

go back to the hotel on the nevada border. they say that there were no signs of trauma. >> the father came to where we had the road blocked off. and did talk to him. and we also had a identifying tattoo on the body that helped us to make the identification. >> it is still early in the investigation. but authorities believe that she been lost due to the freezing temperatures. a 13-year-old girl is in critical condition after being hit by a car in san francisco. the police was hit around 8:00 last night while walking with her family on pine street near stockton. she was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. right now there's no word on if the police detained the driver. in san jose, the chp is trying to figure out just moments before a driver hit and killed a man on highway 101. that happened just before 7:00 last night. and the officers said that the

man may have been trying to cross the highway. volunteers in the east bay are getting ready for a post christmas tradition. they're going to dump hundreds of christmas trees in the lake. and we're there with more on why they are doing this. >> reporter: the christmas trees create a habitat for baby fish and sustain the populations. they'll chain together about a thousand of the trees and drop them into horseshoe lake. you see fishermen arriving waiting to get inside quarry lake's recreation area where this project will take place this morning. these are unsold christmas trees that have been donate the by vendors. and we're showing you video of this event from several years back. it creates a place for baby bass, bluefish and fin to hide

from predators and it creates a food source for fish and it helps the fish grow bigger and healthier and that is something the fishermen like. with man made like these, there's usually no underwater plant life and that is why they have been collecting the unused christmas sees for the last 20 years and put them in the water. they usually last about five years before they eventually

rot. a tsunami warning has been canceled following a earthquake in alaska. it hit about 60 miles west of the city of craig. warnings were issued for southeast alaska and canada but that was canceled when the waves were too small to pose a threat. no serious damage reported. it was followed by six aftershocks, the strongest was 5.1. pg and e is trying to figure out what caused a gas leak in brentwood forcing the evacuation of six homes there. they were evacuated as a precaution and people were allowed to return home last night. they spent the overnight hours to repair the leak to make sure that the people had their gas back on this morning. a man was found lying on the side of the road with life- threatening head injuries. he was found around 9:00 last night around peterson lane. he was unconscious and taken to the hospital. they're not sure what caused

the man's injuries but saying it is suspicious. a marine county, two women have died after an outbreak of the norovirus at the facility. it's often known as the cruise ship virus. during the winter months it can be found in schools and other facilities. >> it's difficult to prevent norovirus at this time of the year. it's in the environment. this was around the holidays and we know that people are having visitors from all over. >> there's no vaccine or treatment for the illness. the health department said that the facility is taking all steps to contain the virus and putting up signs to warn visitors. the fda said that new food rule will make your food safer before it gets to your plate. the proposal will cover 80% of

food grown on u.s. farms. it would require companies to submit detailed safety plans. >> there are thousands and thousands of food producers and agriculture producers and unfortunately we're seeing more problems. >> fda said that the rules build on existing voluntary industry guidelines and it could say six months or longer before the rule become law. if you're heading to san francisco tomorrow, get ready to pay for metered parking. meters will now be enforced on sundays noon to 6:00 p.m. parking on sundays have been traditionally free. but most businesses were closed on sundays. so there was no need for enforcement. the new enforcement keeps up with the current times and demand for parking in the city. 7:08. there are christmas lights up out there. but i'm thinking today is not

livermore and down into areas of mountain view, 32. so mostly gray skies and a cool start to the day. and the winds light and they'll increase this morning. and with the front that you see back here, 150 miles off the coastline, we'll come to gusty conditions, ten to 20 miles an hour expected in the afternoon and then those winds will actually subside. so this is what to come for your saturday. let me show you when i expect the rain to arrive. we're dry for the time being. and if you have errands to run and you don't like to do it in the rain do it early. by 2:00 it will move into the north bay and crossing over into the bay area and widespread over the north bay at 3:00. 4:00 in livermore and 5:00 into the central valley and dinnertime we're all getting wet. evening hours, scattered showers in the forecast and they'll remain into tomorrow

fence. and it happened on an unlit slope. it happened on the same italian mountain where a man collide through and killed two people in 1998. congress called the first superstorm sandy a down payment. and it will help flood insurance claims to $115,000 victims. superstorm sandy damaged or destroyed 600,000 homes or businesses in new york state along. the congress plans to vote on a larger $151 billion package on the 15th. they stalled the bills complaining they were loaded with pork barrel projects unrelated to the storm. sandy left behind damage that no amount of money can repair. the concern is over the criminal justice system. there are two warehouses that

a pilot was arrested for being under the influence. i tsa agent reported smelling alcohol. they gave him a test and he failed and they arrested him. a drunk passenger on a flight from iceland to new york was duct taped to his seat by

there's a new center near pleasant hill park. that building is more than 22,000 square feet and features a library and lounge, classrooms, a computer lab and a dance studio the $9.5 million center was funded through a bond passed by voters in 2009 and a grand opening ceremony will be held 1:00 to 4:00 this afternoon. you can help support the band while listening music. they're hosting a 12 hour band athereon to buy for new instruments. the students are hoping to raise $75,000 in the next two years. the play-a-thon kicked off less than 30 minutes ago and will go till 7:00 tonight at 540 ashbury. 7:26 and driving in the carpooling lane solo and why the driver got caught. >> and the point that the activist is trying to make. >> reporter: and unusual

what is happening, alex. >> reporter: the christmas tree help to sustain the fish population by creating and underwater habitat, similarly for the fish. you might be able to seat the christmas trees -- see the christmas trees sitting there in piles on the shoreline. these are unsold christmas trees that have been donated by vendors. we're showing you video of the event when it happened several years ago. once they're underwater, the trees create a place for baby bass, blue fin and other types of fish to hide from predators.

and the algae that grows on the tree limbs helps to create a food source for the fish. and the fish grow up bigger and healthier that is something that the fishermen certainly appreciate. one man said that he told me that the sunken christmas trees do make a big difference. >> i caught a 9-pound catfish out of here and 7-pound trout and other people caught ten and 12-pound trout. those trees are a big help. it's a food source. it's a good hiding place for them so they can live longer too. >> reporter: this event is organized by the east bay regional park district. and the park district has been collecting unused christmas trees for 20 years or so and pitting them in various lakes. and the trees generally will last for about five years under water before they disintegrate before they have to be

replaced. they rotate around to different lakes and put the christmas trees into different lakes every year. this is a live look at horseshoe lake. and the christmas trees are sitting on the shoreline and volunteers will be arriving in a half hour to take the trees and chain them together and put them into the water. so we'll be here it happened at 8:00 and we'll bring you those picks coming up. a new report accusing top state officials hiding more than a million dollars for more than a decade. it may have been hidden for as long as 14 years. the california attorney general said that the park officials continue the intentional nondiscloser disclosure because afraid to budget cuts. president obama outlined his vision for the new year.

gunpoint right after they put a toddler into their car. it happened around 7:30 last night on belvedere street. the women just left a near grocery store and putting the 16 months old child into a car seat. and the suspect demanded the women's purses and hit the other one the gun. the women were treated at the scene and the child was not hurt. a four month effort in san francisco to get chronic drinkers into a treatment program has been halted by the city's court. thursday a report rejected the plan saying they don't have the authority to jail such offenders by charging them with civil contempt of court. san francisco prosecutors want bail set at $10 million for a than that caused a deadly crash as he was trying to elude

volunteers are getting ready to put christmas trees into this lake. the trees went unused this christmas and donated to the east bay regional park district. you can see the volunteers down there grabbing the trees getting ready to throw them into the water. why? the trees will provide a habitat for the bass, blue bill and sun fish in horseshoe lake. there are reports that lance armstrong may admit to using pempg mans enhancing drugs -- performance enhancing drugs. the "new york times" citing anonymous sources reports that armstrong is considering publicly admitting to doping in the hopes that officials will allow him to resume his career.
